Task 3
: Development and Design

INSTRUCTIONS

To recap this task, we are to develop and design a poster based on the agreed sketch and idea from Task 2. For reference, Mr. Fauzi have agreed to let me proceed with sketch 3C but to try and make the layout more balanced. My poster is a redesigned film poster for 'Pride and Prejudice' inspired by the poster of my choice, a film poster for 'Anatomy of a Murder' by Saul Bass. Inspired by the symbolism, I chose rough cut-out heart shape to symbolize the romance theme and the seesaw as a symbolism to the difference of social class, a theme that is prevalent throughout the movie.

A. Process
Moving to the development, I started by digitizing the layout first and then I moved to exploring different ideas. Below are my first set of exploration, where I personally lean to the topmost poster, with the title inside the heart. However, it needed more work on the balance of the content.

I did further exploration on that layout since I thought it had the biggest potential. I removed the yellow color as I felt it was distracting. I ended up sticking with red and white because red symbolizes passion and love, commonly associated with both emotions. While white represents purity, which I wanted to convey for the two main character's love and feelings towards each other.

For the next round of iteration, I changed the heart shape to be a bit broken in the middle and then I positioned the text to be inside the heart and I added the director's name. I also added the credits for the movie.

Fig 1.3 Iterations

I reused the seesaw and heart shape to work more on the balance which I noticed is lacking in this poster. Mr Fauzi also said the same thing, especially with the empty part on top. I decided to go with Fig 5.5 with the right poster. I adjusted so that the main title and the red rectangle is on the center of the poster while I adjusted the additional text's leading to give more breathing room.

I added a quote from the original poster since there wasn't anything I could add and it would help the balance of the poster. I altered the seesaw so that it's a bit more imbalanced and a bit imperfect, where the seesaw symbolizes 'society' itself and the imperfections of it. The two posters below is the final iterations. I added extra textures on top to add a bit of depth to it.

Rationale

I chose to use red, black, with white as the neutral color. Red symbolizes passion and love, white represents the purity of love, black symbolizes rebellion from the two main characters, against the standards of the society. The rough cut-out shapes of the seesaw and the heart refers to the two characters' imperfect journey to love. The seesaw symbolizes society and the imperfectness represents the imbalanced society. The heart is balanced on top of the seesaw to convey that love overcomes the unfair standards of the society. I chose a rough-edged typeface for the title to symbolize that the love story is full of trials. To complement it, I used a sans-serif for the extra texts.

The poster has design principles like emphasis and contrast, utilizing colors like red and black, rough shapes against the clean rectangle, and different sizes such as the size of the title element. This allows the user's eye to flow from the title element first then the extra texts. I also utilized movement, as seen from the positioning of the title and the imperfect cut of the shapes, making it more dynamic. Balance is also used to ensure that the poster is visually appealing and cohesive.

200 words.

FEEDBACKS

Week 6
- Go with sketch 3C

Week 7
- Was unable to attend the class. Feedback was given in week 8

Week 8
- Fill up the top area with some layers to balance the composition. Because now, the negative space doesn't have any function and the composition is a bit blank on top.
- Find more inspiration
- Can add extra texts like the quote to be included in the poster.

REFLECTIONS:
Overall, this entire experience was quite fun. Once again, I was reminded of the huge role and impact that comes from the use of design principles while designing the poster. It might seem like designing a poster is quick and fast, but the process takes time and most importantly, so many rounds of iterations. Even in my posters, I didn't manage to capture all the hours and processes that go into exploring layouts, typography, and more. This task taught me the execution stage of our sketch and idea might not always turn out like how we expected, but that we should always explore and expand our ideas and it reminded me not to be bounded inside only one sketch and idea.

I observed and found that when exploring alternatives, we shouldn't really be too fixed on our initial idea and sketch and we should go out of our idea box. Even if it seems like it wouldn't work. I find that sometimes what we have in mind doesn't really work and we need to constantly iterate stuffs and also apply the feedback given.
