Project 2: 2A and 2B
LECTURE
Week 5
On week 5, we had our production shoot practice in the studio where we get
hands-on experience on handling cameras and lightings. We shot one scene
from the storyboard. Then we had to assign each group member to a particular
task for the actual production shoot on week 6.
Week 6
Week 6 was the production shoot day.

Week 7
On week 7, we had edited our videos and audios (sync them) and Mr Martin
taught us color correcting and color grading in Adobe Premiere
Pro.
Week 8
Independent Learning Week
Week 9
Mr Martin gave us a short demo on sound-shaping in Adobe Audition. He also
briefed us on the trial shoot for stop-motion on week 10.

Week 5 Quiz results:
Project 2A: Process
a. Production Shooting
We first delegated our roles in week 5:
Producer: Aidi
Director: Aidi
Assistant Director: Jia Xuan
D.O.P: Lizzie & (Assistant Camera) Ser Chen
Art Director: Wu Ziyang
Location Sound: Natalie
Boom Operator: Alya
Actors:
- Waymond: Jia Ern
- Evelyn: Chelsea
The production shooting is done mostly in the studio, however our director
also used other locations. Below is the schedule sheet done by the assistant
director and director.

b. Editing
For the editing, we were first asked to sync our videos and audios before
class. During class of week 6, Mr Martin explained to us about color
correcting and grading in Premiere Pro. Our task was to edit our video but use
our own creativity to change it up. We also had to use different color grading
for different shots:
a. Teal and Orange
b. Bluish
c. Greenish
d. Brownish
e. Desaturated (around 50-70%)
f. B&W, high contrast
Below is my decisions:
Fig 1.2 Color grading and correcting
For the overall video edit, I wanted my video to seem like Waymond is
reminiscing his memories. I cut scene 1 shot 1 into different parts to use
throughout the video. The videos do not follow the actual storyboard.
I chose the Evelyn dying scenes with the cold tones since I think it evokes
sadness. Scene 1 shot 1 also uses the blueish color for the same reason. Scene
2 shot 4 has the teal and orange because I'd like to think that it's more of a
fond, warm memory that Waymond is reminiscing (in my video). Scene 1 shot 2 is
a black and white because I think it seems more 'powerful' and the desaturated
scene goes well with it. I chose scene 3 shot 5 for the warm tone (brownish)
since it looked like a more peaceful scene with Waymond smiling.
For the main process, I just color corrected all the videos first following
the first scene with the final color correction I like. And then after
everything's color corrected, I color graded the videos. Afterwards, I started
cutting clips and arranging it.
My mistake was not choosing the background song first, so while I had every
cut planned and arranged correctly, I had to adjust most of them since I
wanted to match it with the music. Another one was adjusting the music since
it was too long and by the end of the video, the music kept on being louder so
I had to mix it with the ending parts. I used the exponential fade sound
effect to make it a bit seamless and end the video with another fade.

Project 2B: TikTok/Reel Video
For project 2B, we are tasked to create a tiktok/reel video of our favorite
trends but with more creativity. I first thought of tiktok/reel trends I
liked; vlogs. Vlogs such as 'A day in my life' videos are interesting since I
can see how each person lives their life differently on a random day.
While a day in my life videos showcase their typical days, there are also
travel vlogs which is fun as I love travelling. I get to see countries I have
never been to and I acquire many recommendation and tips on travel.
My third favorite is vlogs but with a twist of cinematic feel. Editors
incorporate color grading and dramatic shots with different angles that makes
their vlog feel like a movie.
I decided to do 'A Day in My Life' video but with a twist; the whole day was
simply a dream and the video ends with a scene of me waking up in the night,
but the room feels empty and quiet. I plan to take advantage of color grading
to alter the colors and tone of each clip.
For this, I drew my (poorly) drawn storyboards, consisting of the main scenes
I want to show. For the music, I didn't really have anything in mind, it came
right before my editing process.

The Video Process;
a. Shooting
The shooting is done on my actual planned trip to KL with my friend. Since I
wanted to do a 'day in my life' vlog concept, I didn't want the video to be
boring, filled with just me going to campus and the library. So I decided to
film the shots when I went to KL.
I want the video to have this 'fun' feel to it, not really cinematic, just
chaos and fun. I want some clips to look like I randomly decided to pull out
my camera to film something because it's memorable to me.
The first shot, the shoe scene, is recorded on the day I went to KL as well
with my phone placed on the floor. I want this shot to focus on my shoes. The
last scene (bed) was actually shot few days after the trip.
For the bed scene, I filmed it at nighttime with the main lights off. I used
my desk lamp for a little lighting and lowered the brightness during
filming.
b. Editing
To start the editing process, I picked out the clips I wanted to use and
inserted the song I chose. I found the song from a Tiktok video and thought
that it could capture more 'fun' in my video. The one from tiktok is a sped-up
version with only 20 seconds of duration. I decided to download the audio from
YouTube instead. I kept only the parts building up to the chorus and up to
1minute of the music.
After all these were finalized, I want the first part of my video, the
'getting to KL' part, to match-cut the claps in the song. I used the 'marker'
feature to make the process easier. For the main part, the part where we're
strolling in KL, I kept the duration all around 1 to 2 seconds for each clip,
depending on each videos.
For the color grading, the first part of my video is already quite warm, but
not as warm as the main part. As the video goes on, I increased the warmness
of each clip, up until the main part of my video.
Fig 2.1 Color grading on 1st part
For the main part of the video, I equalized all the color grading to these
values.
For the last scene, the actual shot is with warm, yellow lighting, so the
video looks warm. I wanted the scene to be as dark as possible (as long as
still visible). Here are the values:
Fig 2.4 Before color grading (last scene)
Fig 2.5 After color grading (last scene)
For finishing touches, I added the film frame I found in the 'effects'
panel and added some text. The text reads 'A day strolling around Kuala
Lumpur'. I divided it to 4 sections and I made them appear one by one on
each clip.

FEEDBACKS
Week 9
Proposal is okay to start, can only check when the editing is
done.
REFLECTIONS:
Project 2 have been a difficult (since it's new to me) but fun one. I
enjoyed the production shoot which I had no experience beforehand, even
though it was very tiring as the D.O.P but my group was very helpful to
each other. I also enjoyed the editing process that gave me the creative
freedom to create a trailer out of the shots we took.
Project 2B is also equally fun, though definitely less tedious and
tiring. I like that my concept makes me film actual memories I made that
day. I also had fun during the editing (which was less difficult with
Capcut).
Throughout these past few weeks, I've grown a deeper appreciation for
people behind the movies I've seen, after knowing just how tiring it is
to shot a few scenes. I've also grown more appreciative to the whole
process of film-making, knowing that it takes a lot of hard work and
time.
