Project 1: CV Prototype

Lectures

Lectures are recorded in this blog.

Instructions

For project 1, we were tasked to create a prototype of our CV/Resume either in Figma or Adobe XD. I chose figma since it's a lot simpler and lighter.

I was inspired by Mr Shamsul's example:

Fig 1.1 Inspiration

I thought that this layout was clear and concise, fun and not like the usual CV/Resume template. Based on this, I've had a result in mind so I started right away. I've decided to put in these information
a. Name
b. Location
c. Job title
d. About me
e. Technical skills
f. Soft skills
g. Education
h. Experiences
i. Past projects (3)

I searched for a color palette in Pinterest and found the color palette I used (which I only realized were almost exactly the same with the example after submission).

Fig 1.2 Final Profile Section

Instead of a regular square or circle in this project, I used a semi-circle shape across the whole design. For my profile section, I included my photo that I masked into a semi-circle shape. I put out my job title and my location as floating shapes around my picture. About me was also written in this section. This is the first section that the viewer will see upon opening my CV and I thought that aligning it on the center is more impactful. I added the 'Hello! I'm' to sound more friendly and laidback.

At first, I tried out a more fun layout, in fig 1.3. However I thought that it looked really messy and all over the place for the information.

Fig 1.3 Attempt 1; Profile Section

Fig 1.4 is my final section for skills, education, and experiences. For education, to minimize space and content, I only included my senior high and university, since my junior high and elementary are irrelevant to my job. On the skills section, I put the software logo into a rounded rectangle, which is another element I use throughout the design.

For education and experience section, I prioritized readability and conciseness and made sure it's easy to read and understand. I gave a brief description of my job desk during the time of experience. The four boxes on the bottom are words to describe me and can also act like my soft skills list.

Before this final attempt, I had done this version, which follows fig 1.5 on the attempt #1 of profile page. I was going for a fun playful look but I think it looks cluttered and people wouldn't like scrolling a lot. I feel like it's also somehow a waste of space.

For the past projects section, below is my first attempt. I don't really remember why I chose to use this layout but I ditched it since my past works wouldn't fit in these rectangles. I did plan to give out a little explanation of my work and only displaying 3.

Fig 1.6 Attempt on past projects/work section

I decided to use this table of content to introduce the past works section, which was heavily inspired by Mr. Shamsul's example. I saw that this design was clearer and more concise for the viewers.

Fig 1.7 Past works section; table of content

As for the content of the past works, I tried to display it as minimal as possible so that the viewers are immediately directed to it, as seen in fig 1.8. I only showed the works I'm most proud of.

Moving on to the contact section, I want this section to stand out a bit, hence the bright yellow background right after the dark green background. To avoid the space being too cluttered, I chose 3 socials that I want to include, which are my most used socials. Since the first attempt, I've stuck with this layout since I didn't want this part to be complex.

Reflections

This project was more fun than I had initially thought. We were given creative freedom to design our own CV. And while I really wanted to explore and make my design fun, I also thought about the coding possibilities as a beginner. The process of making it was quite fun and enjoyable.

Through this project, I feel like my design skills have been refined once again. The need to make a fun design but the reminder to have a balance of both fun and readability for other people really helped.
