Final Project; Self Titled

INSTRUCTIONS

For the final project, we are tasked to create a poster called 'Self-Titled' in which the poster has to capture who we are as a person according to how we describe ourselves. In the poster, we also include a quote of our choice and use our typeface that we have designed in our Typography module. The final poster should also be animated. We also have to use our own picture and make the poster according to how we want it.

Process Work

1. Sketch, idea, moodboard, proposal

Before I began the project, I had to compile a proposal slides on Digital Photography and Imaging consisting of my idea, sketch, short biography, and more. Here's my proposal:

After arranging my proposal, I sketched out my idea. I wanted my poster to include hand-drawn typography which has a feel of 'imperfect' to it to further emphasize that growth and going out of my comfort zone wasn't a perfect and easy journey but the problems I encountered were what made me grow into a better person. Furthermore, the hand-drawn typography would also complement my font since I couldn't use all letters in my quote. I also wanted my final poster to include bright and contrasting colors as well as textures such as halftones and hand-drawn doodles.

2. Typography in Adobe Illustrator
On adobe illustrator, I utilized the pencil tool to create a flowy type of hand-drawn letters and I used the smooth tool to refine it. Afterwards, I imported it to photoshop as a smart object. I imported each letter separately so it would be easier for me to modify anything later on. Here's my first layout of the text.

While working on the typography part, I decided to explore another style which I thought might be able to complement my existing font. For the second style (shown below), I did a hand-drawn typography with sharp edges and rougher texture. The top picture in fig 2.3 was my first attempt. The middle picture in fig 2.3 was my second attempt where I tried to make the letters fit around each other better. On the last attempt, I decided to make my hand-drawn letters more contrasting in strokes. I tried to make the thin and thick strokes more extreme in contrast. To create this, I used the pen tool and used direct selection tool to modify each anchor points.

I incorporated this style into my current layout poster.

When I asked for feedback from Mr Hafiz, he said that the flowy style fits the style more. On week 13, we were taught how to make 3D in Adobe Illustrator so I tried it on my letters to see if it fits my poster. For my 3D, I wanted a plastic balloon texture so I used Adobe Substances to download my desired textured and used it on my letters. I then exported the letter set to Photoshop as smart object. I utilized the gradient map function to change the colors and still keeping the shadows and highlights of the 3D aspects. More details to the photoshop process: DPI Blog

At the end, I decided to use the 3D letters since I thought it added more unique traits to my poster. I also felt like it complemented the 2d doodles well.

3. Textures in Adobe Illustrator
I utilized what I've learned to create textures for my poster. I first made the paper texture using the note-paper effect.

On week 13, Mr Hafiz told me to add details to my poster where different layers can have different sizes of the halftone. Initially, I had used only one size and I had found it in Google. I decided to use the repeat tool and formed it in a grid using one ellipse. To create the different size and distances between the ellipses, I used the button on the top and the left with arrows pointing to the right and left to adjust the distances of the rows and columns. To resize the overall texture, I just decreased the entire thing using the points at the four corners.

After everything have been finalized in my Adobe Illustrator, I moved on to my Photoshop process which mostly are giving textures and effects of halftone colors on each letter as well as doodling the elements.

4. Feedbacks
Mr Hafiz commented that each different layer can have different amount of halftone/dots so it doesn't look flat. I ended up liking this detail, since now it doesn't look too flat and plain.

FEEDBACKS

Week 13
The layout overall looks good but should consider illustrating some elements that match my font style. Hand-drawn letter looks good and the halftone pattern also looks good. Suggested that different layer can have different amount of texture; the halftone/dots so it doesn't look flat.

Week 15
The 3D typography and the whole poster looks good already.

REFLECTIONS:
Experience: Throughout this project, I've learned so many more things especially about how to combine all my knowledge in three softwares into one final result. I think it was a fun and enjoyable process since I get to create something from scratch and from my own idea and creativity. Despite the long process, I genuinely had fun during the time because I get to explore a lot of ideas and techniques.
Observations: I really observed that knowing which software would be suitable in making a certain element can be really useful in this project. Some software are better in making certain things than other softwares. So knowing each software really well is the key on this project.
Findings: I find that trying to combine the usage of three software into one final result is quite tricky. However, I found that it really made the process easier rather than forcing one software to do all the process. It made the whole process far more efficient.
