REFLECTIONS:
Experience:
During these 14 weeks, I have learned a lot of new knowledge and skills surrounding typography. I was quite interested in typography itself so getting to learn from the basics really made me appreciate typography even more. This module isn't an easy one, I feel like it's one of the more challenging ones but it teaches me a lot of new skills such as Adobe InDesign and FontLab. Overall, I had a lot of fun during the module, despite requiring hard work and discipline, I was happy to have experienced this module. I'm also thankful that Ms Hsin and Mr Vinod consistently gave us helpful critiques that allow us to improve our works and as a designer.
Observations:
While undergoing this module, I've really observed how typography requires a very good eye to detail. Usually, details are overlooked and ignored so I felt like the smallest change in type design can greatly affect readability and aesthetic. The same applies for text formatting as well since before this module, I didn't really pay attention to a lot of details when formatting text. I've also observed that typography as a whole isn't just aesthetics, but also readability and accessibility. Since starting this module, I've been more observant to typography around me, I find myself appreciating them after knowing the tedious process.
Findings:
Over the past weeks, one of my key findings is that typography goes beyond the aesthetics and creativity. Throughout the module, I found that less is sometimes better such as in expressing type, formatting type, and designing type. It may seem simple and more minimalistic, but the end result is timeless and readable, which I find is one of the key aspect in typography. I find that more complicated works don't always result in 'better' works.
