Task 3: Digital Triptych

LECTURE
Week 10
During lecture, Mr Hafiz briefed us on the task and taught us the McCloud transition theories as a basic foundation for our digital triptych.
1. Moment to Moment
2. Aspect to Aspect
3. Scene to Scene
4. Action to Action
5. Subject to Subject
6. Non-sequitur

Week 11
On week 11, we were briefed about our final project; self titled with the other 2 modules.

INSTRUCTIONS

For our digital triptych task, we are tasked to illustrate a three panel comic based on our urban legend. Three panels should include before, during and after the climax of our urban legends.

A. Process Work
1. Sketching
I began by sketching my idea, I only needed to ideate 2 other panels since the climax will be the same with my digital poster.

Fig 1.1 Sketch (W11 03/12/2023)

1st Panel: I wanted the before panel to capture how the situation is fine with brighter tone later on with the girl just holding the candle.

2nd Panel: This is where the climax happen and the bloody mary appearing, also captured in my digital poster.

3rd Panel: For the third panel, I thought that it should be able to capture what the appearance of bloody mary and bloody mary herself did to the girl which in most stories is murdering the girl. I decided to portray the aftermath with the girl seemingly already lying dead on the floor and still keeping the same shot and showing the blood dripping everywhere.

I use the moment to moment transition as I want it quite straightforward and the whole situation happens quickly.

After asking Mr Hafiz for feedback and approval to start the digitalization process, he said that it is good to proceed.

2. Digitization
I first adjusted my initial poster artwork to fit in my rectangular panels, I used clipping mask to hide the girl's excess area and the mirror's excess part. Afterwards, I worked on the first panel. For the first panel, I simply modified everything to look brighter and removed the blood and the bloody mary appearing.

Fig 1.2 First panel (W11 06/12/2023)

The first panel is pretty plain because I want the focus to be on the girl, the mirror and the overall 'brighter' tone of colors. I also modified the lighting and the gradients on the background as well.

Fig 1.3 Second panel (W11 06/12/2023)

On the second panel, I made my sole focus on how I can dim the colors and make it look darker thus why I made the hanging candlelights much dimmer and the only clear light source is the candle the girl is holding. I also added the right eye and the mouth for the bloody mary, which was not illustrated in my poster. I've also made the background much darker.

Fig 1.4 Third panel first attempt (W11 /06/12/2023)

For the third panel, I removed the girl and made it a chance for the audience to guess what might happened to her. I've also removed the candle and added more blood that comes from the wall. I modified the gradient on each blood drip to focus on the highlights that is created from the hanging candlelights. I decided to add the scream expression at the bottom to further describe what might happen to the girl.

Fig 1.5 Third panel second attempt (W11 06/12/2023)

On the second attempt, I realized that the table wouldn't be visible at all with how dark it is and I probably should just focus on the mirror itself, so I reduced its size and positioned it in the center and added a blood drip on its right side.

Fig 1.6 Third panel 2nd attempt (alternative) (W11 06/12/2023)

I created an alternative version where there is no text of the scream expression. I thought that doing this leaves even more room for the audience to guess what happened to the girl.

I've also added a note paper texture to the walls. I wanted to add grain textures but unfortunately some parts are too small in size that the grain looks more like a pixel and it failed to create the look of gradient I wanted so I decided against it.

FEEDBACKS
Week 11
Mr Hafiz said for the transition that I'm choosing (moment to moment) the sketch is okay to start digitalizing.

REFLECTIONS:
Experience: Throughout this digital triptych project, I noticed that I start understanding more on operating illustrator, especially on how to utilize gradients to create shadows and highlights in my illustration. The process in this one is easier than what I've felt through the previous poster since it was my first time.
Observations: I observed that adding shadows and paying attention to the lighting really elevates our final results and creates a sense of depth.
Findings: I find that the whole process is quite enjoyable since I've also got to learn new things about visual narrative during the whole thing.

Week 11:
Fig 2.1 Framed Ink by Marcos Mateu-Mestre

For week 11, I continued reading from Framed Ink on page 36-37, how to compose an image with purpose. I read this page specifically because my drawings are similar in shot.

Fig 2.2 Picture 1-2

Image 1: If the space between them is clear of obstacles, the impression is that they have a positive communication. They are also equally lit, making the feeling of personal balance emphasized.
Image 2: If we position visually heavy elements between the two characters, the visual dialogue between them will be broken.

Fig 2.3 Picture 3-4

Image 3: if only one of them is lit, while the other is in shadows, the one in the light can have a more positive intentions.
Image 4: If one of the characters are lit in a way that offers a bigger tonal contrast, our eyes will immediately go to that character, giving the character more visual relevance.
