Task 2: Photo Manipulation & Double Exposure

LECTURE
Week 5
For week 5, we were taught how to do a double exposure image where we used selection tool, the masking tools, image adjustment tools such as curves to increase contrast and gradient maps to change colors as well as incorporate the use of blending modes.

Week 6
For week 6, we were taught how to use displacement maps. We were given three demos where displacement maps should be used. A displacement map takes the texture of a picture, it has to be in black and white and should be saved to .psd before applying the displace filter to an object. It's important that our layer should be changed to smart object so that we can edit the amount of displacement we put in our objects easily.

Week 7
On week 7, we were given a demo on how to create a human cyborg by replacing parts of the body with a cyborg/robot and adding prosthetic skin. We were to use all the tools we have learned these past weeks such as the pen tool, lasso tool, masking, and more.

INSTRUCTIONS
For task 2, we are to create a double exposure portrait using our own picture. We also have to do it in our own desired style. Aside from that, we have to do a photo manipulation where we combine 2 objects into one seamlessly, choosing objects that are similar in color or texture or size and more.

On week 5, we were taught how to do double exposure.

Fig 1.1 Assets for demo (W5 27/10/2023)

We used the tools we have learned in the past 5 weeks such as masking, utilizing blending modes as well as trying out gradient maps. Here is the final result of my demo:

Week 6
On week 6, we had a demo on using displacement maps to add texture to our objects. First we had to made a flat Malaysian flag to look like it had texture using fabric displacement. We had to change the fabric into a black and white png and increase the contrast and saved it as a .psd file. In the Malaysian flag file, we applied the displacement filter to the flag and chose the fabric displacement file. Afterward, we added the fabric photo and changed the blending mode to multiply.

For the second demo, we also made the image of the woman into a black and white image, increased the contrast and saved a copy of it as a .psd displacement file. Then with the original file, we added the Liverpool image and applied the displacement filter to it. Last, we changed the blending mode to darken and lowered the opacity.

For the last exercise, we also changed the cat into a black and white, increased the contrast and save it as a copy as a displacement file. On the original photo of the cat, we added the leopard print and applied the displacement filter of the cat. To finish it, we apply the multiply blending mode and lowered the opacity.

Week 7
On week 7, we learned how to create a cyborg human by combining the tools we have learned. We first cut out a part of her right leg and added shadow to it by using the ellipse selection tool. After that we added the prosthetic limb and masked the unneeded parts. Then we had to add synthetic skin by using pen tool.

a. Process Work
I began my process by researching for inspirations in Pinterest. I wanted mine to be cut out following the building like this.

Fig 2.1 Inspiration from here (W5 27/10/2023)

I asked my friend to take a picture of me and I cut it out by using the select subject feature and masked it.

Fig 2.2 Cutting out picture (W6 01/11/2023)

Fig 2.3 Picture used by Malte Schmidt on Unsplash (W6 01/11/2023)

I added a curve adjustment layer to add contrast and added a black and white adjustment layer as well. Afterward, I combine the picture by using clipping mask and I masked out on my self photo masking layer to erase both the city sky and my hair. I copied the image and flipped it vertically and aligned it to the top image.

I added a gradient to make the lower part darker than my face.

Fig 2.5 Gradient (W6 01/11/2023)

I decided that I wanted my work to look darker so I increased the contrast using the curve adjustment layer.

Then I added gradient map of blue and white and applied it to everything. For the background, I used a gradient fill layer. I like the bright blue on the cityscape since it looks unique.

Lastly, I added birds and some clouds. For the birds, I set the blending mode to multiply and adjusted the opacity. For the clouds, I set the picture to screen to blend better.

2. Photo Manipulation
a. Process Work
I began by researching ideas in Pinterest and then sketching my own ideas. I sketched 4 ideas and the paint roller + corndog was the one chosen to be digitized.
Fig 3.1 Pinterest references and ideas (W6 27/10/2023)

Fig 3.2 Sketches of my ideas (W6 27/10/2023)

Three of the ideas are taken from the pinterest reference, however I ideated the paint roller and corndog because I thought the roller and the corndog had similar textures and can be blended pretty well, they also have a similar cylinder-like shape. After asking for feedback, Mr Martin chose the paint roller + corndog and the teabag (teabag + bag handle). So I moved on to the digitizing process.

Fig 3.5 Process on digitalization (W6 27/10/2023)

For this process, I first used the content aware fill to replace the paint roller to the background color as accurate as possible and immediately placing the already cut corndog picture. The corndog picture was cut out using the magic wand and cleaned up using the masking tool.

Fig 3.6 Process on replacing the paint roller (W6 27/10/2023)

I wanted to replace the wooden stick of the corndog with the metal handle of the paint roller so I selected handle using lasso tool and copy and pasted it. I adjusted the angle and the position of the stick and masked unneeded parts out. Mr Martin also suggested that the sauce could be dripping as 'paint' so I copy and pasted parts of the sauce and adjusted the color.

On week 7, I showed Mr Martin my progress before continuing. However, he said that it needed to look more surreal and can only be achieved when photoshopped. The two combination can be done without photoshop, just sticking a corndog into a paint roller handle can make it look like that. He suggested an idea; a paint roller and a guinea pig. I immediately proceed to start the new photo manipulation.

Fig 3.8 Original guinea pig photo (W7 10/11/2023)
Fig 3.9 Original paint roller photo (W7 10/11/2023)

The first step was to cut out the guinea pig photo. I used the select subject feature because there was a huge contrast with the background. I also cleaned it up using the masking tool. To clean the watermarks out, I decided to use the patch tool to slowly erase the watermarks. I also cut out the paint roller using magic wand so that I can add the shadows again later on. Afterwards, I combined the two.

Fig 3.10 Cutting out the paint roller (W7 10/11/2023)

I also added a background solid color to help me work better and see the contrast.

Fig 3.11 Combining the two images (W7 10/11/2023)

I used masking tool to erase the other half of the guinea pig body and and used a rough brush to copy the texture of the paint roller in creating rough edges. My next step was to adjust the color of the paint roller. I felt like it looked too blue and too cool whereas the guinea pig had a warmer tone to it. I used the color balance adjustment layer to fix this up. I wanted the paint roller to have a warmer/neutral tone.

Fig 3.12 Adjusting color balance (W7 10/11/2023)

To make it look like one object, I decided to increase the brightness of the paint roller and decreased the contrast a bit. I've also decided to change the color of the background since the object will be white.

Fig 3.13 Adjusting brightness and contrast (W7 10/11/2023)

Lastly, I added shadows using the brush tool and added gaussian blur as well as lowered the opacity to around 70-80%.

FEEDBACKS
Week 5
General:
Specific:

Week 6
General:
Specific: Sketch is good already, the 1st one (corndog + paint roller) and the teabag is the one chosen for digitization process.

Week 7
General:
Specific:
The photo manipulation needs to look more surreal. The corndog looks like it can just be sticked to the paint roller, needs to look more photoshopped. Try using an animal like a guinea pig and combine it to the paint roller.

REFLECTIONS:
Experience: Overall, I enjoyed these past few weeks on working on double exposure and photo manipulation. I felt like both of these tasks require more creativity since it depends on our imagination. It was fun to see my vision on these tasks happen as I was doing it.
Observations: I observed that I needed to be very detailed on every little thing because the smallest mistake can reduce the quality of my work. Cut-outs need to be very neat.
Findings: I find that Photoshop projects are more fun than I thought it would be.
